Initiatives for Healthy Communities (IHC) seeks to eradicate intergenerational poverty through a comprehensive approach which includes accessible behavior health services, childhood literacy efforts, and career readiness initiatives
IHC was established in 2017 as an expansion of a community-based project led by Dr. Valerie D. Jackson. Over the past five years, the agency has implemented various projects, including IHC Depression and Anxiety Screenings, L.E.A.D. Houston out-of-school year-round program, and the Jobs Preparedness Initiative. The Depression and Anxiety Screenings involve community-based screening for mental health issues, while L.E.A.D. Houston is a community-based program for children focusing on literacy, socio-emotional development, and career readiness. The Jobs Preparedness Initiative supports HHA residents in advancing from job preparedness to job readiness.
